The big question is how do we gain that self-insight?
At the University of Auckland, Melanie led an initiative for over 475 academic and professional staff to complete the Life Styles Inventory⢠(LSI) with personalized coaching for several years. The purpose was for these key people to gain self-insight so that they could enhance their leadership as well as their life satisfaction.
The outcome was a positive impact at the personal leadership level, as well as at the organizational level, with increased engagement.

What is the Life Styles Inventory⢠(LSI 1)?
The Life Styles Inventoryâ˘Â (LSI) distinguishes and measures 12 key thinking patterns, or styles, that are either effective or ineffective. These styles represent specific ways in which we choose to think and behave and are represented on a circumplex.
The Circumplex is a circular graph that measures the LSI 12 distinct styles of thinking, behavior, and interaction. It clusters these into three general Styles as shown in the diagram below:
- Constructive
- Passive/Defensive
- Aggressive/Defensive.

The LSI 1Â provides a quantified measure for looking at your strengths and self-defeating behaviours, so that you can further improve upon strengths and precisely target the areas you need to change.
Reliability and Validity of the LSI
The reliability and validity of the LSI has been thoroughly researched and established in a wide variety of populations by Human Synergistics. It consistently measures what it claims to measure.

Who is the LSI designed for?
The LSI assessment is designed for executives, leaders, managers, and people in professional and technical roles.
LSI 1 (self-description):Â You self- assess your thinking styles, personal effectiveness and satisfaction at work and home using the Human Synergistics digital platform.
LSI 2 (othersâ descriptions):Â Up to 12 of your peers, managers and/or direct reports provide confidential feedback on your behaviour and effectiveness. The results will identify your confirmed strengths, unrecognised strengths, blind spots and stumbling blocks.
The data collected from your assessments are processed electronically and compared to a global norm group.
Working with your accredited LSI coachÂ
Firstly, your coach will have a conversation about your current situation and what you are wanting to achieve in the personal and professional aspects of your life. This will help to determine whether the LSI 1 or LSI 1 & 2 assessment program is better suited to help you achieve your aspirations.

7 Steps for Lifting your Personal Leadership
Step 1 â Initial Coaching Introduction
Free (30 minutes)
Your coach will get an understanding of your current situation and thoughts on your future objectives.
Explore whether the LSI 1 or LSI 2 coaching program is the most relevant for you.
Step 2 - Life-Style Inventory⢠(LSI) 20-30 minutes online
Completion of online LSI 1 assessment using the confidential Human Synergistics portal. This measures 12 specific styles or thinking patterns that can either contribute to or detract from your effectiveness.
Step 3 â Coaching Session #1: AWARENESS (60 minutes)
You receive your LSI1 Report and digital âDevelopment Guide. An accredited coach explains your results and helps you interpret them. You determine your âWHYâ for any personal change, with a focus on your work and life priorities.Â
Step 4 - Coaching Session #2: ACCEPTANCE (60 minutes)
You will look at what mindsets or thinking styles may be hindering your personal effectiveness. You will determine what specific styles you can leverage to enhance your effectiveness and some actions to do in the following weeks.
 Step 5 - Coaching Session #3: ACTION (60 minutes)
You will draft your Development Plan for the next 4-6 months to help you gain momentum and prioritize some actions for the next coaching session.
Step 6 - Coaching Session #4:Â ACTION (30 minutes)
You will review your progress with the coach and decide on actions to prioritize for the following month.
Step 7 â Coaching Session #5: Progress check-in (30 minutes)
We will check in and celebrate your progress and wins. Determine a date to re-assess your LSI 1 to see the difference in your thinking and behaviors.
